Typhoon Haiyan

How does the devastation brought from Typhoon Haiyan make you feel?

Super typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda, made its first landfall on November 8. The Visayan region was greatly affected, however, other parts of the Philippines felt the strong rain and wind. Thousands of people have died and probably millions of Filipinos have been displaced. Victims are in need of basic necessities such as food, water, medical aid, and much more. Thankfully national and international aid has been given to those who have been affected.

Moments after super typhoon Haiyan made landfall, I switched on the TV to see if there was any news about it. Immediately after I turned on the TV, the local news station was on and I was surprised to see that the news reporters were already describing what the typhoon has done. My first reaction was, it is going to affect me? As soon as I asked myself this question, I realized that I was very selfish. I wasn't thinking about the people who were already affected but thinking about myself.

As soon as the lights went out, I was a little upset about the whole situation. I had no power for about 15 hours, and I was very unhappy. As soon as I heard about the extent of the damage brought by the typhoon, I was angry at myself for thinking such things. People in places like Tacloban are extremely devastated with no food, water, shelter, as they lost everything, including family members or friends who have lost their lives.

Watching videos of what happened during the typhoon shocked me. It seemed so unreal that this was happening in the Philippines. Seeing all the damage and bodies lying in streets broke my heart. I couldn't continue to watch the news anymore. I'm just glad to know that there are so many people helping out the survivors of super typhoon Haiyan. We all have a moral obligation to help.
